SCARCITY of WATER
The present cold spell has frozen the ground to the depth of several inches leaving the springs but partially filled with water, and, from present appearances, many wells will give out before spring comes to open the ground. Indeed, in some places, there are wells which are dry, having nowater for months. The wells in this vicinity have but a cant supply, which is unprecendented at this season of the year.

WEATHER PREDICTION
Many of our readers, must have noticed thereapid increase of cold on Friday afternoon, and the copious cloud and spray formation in the sky from 3 to 5 p.m. The weather Saturday monring was very severe only 4* above zero. By 1 o'clock, Saturday forenoon the mercury had risen from 4* to 20*. The fact that the weather can even be predicted, not only generally, but even in detail, is certainly noteworthy.

DUDLEY - A lad named Thomas Campbell, employed in the mill of Clark & Pond, North Dudley, was severely and probably fatally injured last week, by being caught and crushed in a belt, upon which he was carelessly swinging. He was badly mangled by being whirled round a shaft several hundred times, and will probably die.

SINGULAR AND FATAL ACCIDENT
Andrew Fenton, a young man employed in carting coal to the mills of Samuel Hodges in Cherry Valley, was killed instantly on Saturday evening by an unusual accident. He had just turned his team from the highway towards the yeard of the mills, and was climbing upon the rear of his wagon, when he was struck by the pole of a carriage passing in the highway and killed. Owing to the prevalent report in the vicinity of the accident, that the death was caused by reckless driving on the part of another person, a coronor's inquest was held, and the jury found the death to have been accidental, Fenton probably undertaken to jump up on his wagon after his mules had started into a trot, adn gone under the wheel. His skull and neck were broken. Spy
