Last Wednesday, there was a hearing of an assault with intent to kill case before Justice Stack. The parties are named respectively, John Gallagher and Patrick Crotty. The first named, plaintiff, and the latter, defendant. The origin of the difficulty is somewhat on this wise: some weeks ago, the plaintiff had stolen from him nine head of cattle from his pasture in the close neighborhood of this city. An unavailing search has since been made for them. Last Saturday week, while in the market-house, the plaintiff went up to the stall of the defendant. During the progress of an excited conversation between them in relation to the stolen animals, the plaintiff charged the defendant with their theft. Defendant resented this charge with a blow from a hammer, which prostrated plaintiff to the ground, rendering him insensible for a few moments. After hearing evidence on both sides, the justice bound the defendant over in the sum of #250 to appear at the next term of the circuit court in Belleville.

Mr. DANIEL EDWARDS, one of our prominent citizens, died of pnuemonia and inflammation of the lungs last Thursday morning at 4 o'clock. These diseases were contracted while digging a well for one of his houses on the corner of St. Louis avenue and Fourth street. He could get no help to satisfy him; and as he was a man somewhat advanced in years, the work preformed resulted in his death. He leaves a wife and child in comfortable circumstances.

CHRISTOPHER SHOUY, a driver of one of Mr. Schroder's soda wagons, had his leg broken last Saturday by being thrown from the wagon he was driving. The accident happened on the Belleville road. There is talk of getting a ball up for his benefit. We hope it will be done, for he is a deserving object of charity, as he has a wife and shildrenentirely depending upon his labor for their support.

JAMES PATRICK, a boy who was accidentally shot, a few days ago, by another boy, named John B. Bowman, is entirely recovered. How young boys their age get hold of firearms is one of the mysteries that is hard to account for. We hope that this accident will prove a warning to the two boys here named as well as to others.
