Cyndie's memories: Grand-Dad was a great storyteller. One wasn't sure when he got started if he were kidding or the event really happened.
I asked him one time how he fell in love with Gramma. Well, she had been dating Cliff (Grand-Dad's brother) first.
No details on the break up were forthcoming.
However, Grand-Dad was working on a farm and Gram used to ride her horse (long hair flying) by the fence where they got to talking.
In other words, was Gram a flirt?
Grand-Dad hated to kiss. He said there were too many germs  so we rarely got to see the two of them affectionate.  When they did it was a main event and we teased them about it.
The tombstone.
In the Dennis plot in Erie, a soldier from either WWI or WWII got buried in the plot. No relation. When Grand-Dad heard of it, he said "that they may as well leave him there - he wasn't doing any harm."

Grand-Dad's father (Robert William Dennis)  and aunt (Dora) were fostered out when their mother died. They lived with the Bliss family in Iowa.

Robert William's father Isaac married again to a Margaret Smith. Census records do not indicate that the two younger children ever returned to the family.

CYNDIE'S MEMORIES: I have fond memories of feeding the outdoor birds. There was a feeder placed in the yard so we could watch through the windows. She loved the red birds and the very small ones.
Practical, understanding, & accepting woman. She was a hard worker. Chores never seemed a burden when she was around.
Berry picking was an annual event. Small tin buckets, getting scratched by the thorns, eating more than we put in the bucket.
To keep us quiet (we younguns) Gram would arm us with needle, floss and a stamped pattern to embroider for pillowcases, etc.  I still find this work comforting and meditative today.

Some of her favorite expressions were "I'll be jiggered." which means perplexed. A jigger was some small gnat type bug that bit.

BECKY'S MEMORIES: Oh my gosh I remember so much about grandma since I spent so much time with her .  The thing that always made me laugh was she would be sitting outside or inside and she would be sleeping and I would say grandma are you sleeping and she would always reply no I am just resting my eyes .  She taught me how to bake , and I was always willing to clean up at her house, but not at home .  Somehow cleaning at grandma's house was so much more fun .  She loved it when I would comb her hair, she would rest her eyes then !  When I think of grandma I remember how happy I was with her, she believed in me and said I could do anything.
